Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of the former president's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
