Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
