The anticipation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
